The events around our nation that have unfolded over the last week, which transpired after the nation watched in horror as George Floyd was killed, are beyond disturbing to me. However, I am a white female and cannot begin to imagined the pain and devastation that the black community is feeling. I can only say that this is unacceptable in the year 2020; we as a nation of people are better than this.
The United Church of Christ’s Vision is “United in Christ's love, a just world for all.” It saddens me that the country is not closer to achieving this vision. We must come together to begin to understand each other’s perspectives in an effort to realize systemic change and begin the healing process.
Sesame Street issued a statement, which I feel is relevant to many organizations including UCHS. I’ve adapted below and applied for UCHS.
Adapted version for UCHS:
“Racism has no place in our communities or in any community. The UCC and UCHS were built on diversity, inclusion, and especially, kindness. Today and every day we stand together with our Black team members, partners, residents, tenants, participants and the entire Black community. We stand with our friends around the globe to speak out against racism, to promote understanding and to create a world that is smarter, stronger and kinder.”
Be Kind to All.
